Terms of use

DRAFT for Tom’s review: not yet checked by a lawyer.

Last updated 4 October 2026.

These are the rules for using I Want I Need. We’ve written them in plain English. By making an account or using the service you agree to them. How we handle your information is on our privacy page.

The short version

  • I Want I Need is a free wishlist app. Make lists, share them, and friends can secretly claim gifts.
  • You own what you put on it. You let us store it and show it to the people you choose.
  • Be kind, be honest, don’t misuse it. We can close accounts that break these rules.
  • We’re not a shop. We don’t sell, deliver or take payment for gifts, and we’re not responsible for what happens between people.
  • We try hard to keep the service running, but it comes without guarantees, and you can delete your account whenever you like.

Who we are

I Want I Need is a free wishlist app for the UK, at app.iwantineed.co.uk. It is run by [legal name and postal address to be added before launch] (“we”, “us”).

Questions about these terms: hello@iwantineed.co.uk.

Your account

  • You must be 16 or over to have an account.
  • Give us a true name and a working email address, and keep your password to yourself. You’re responsible for what happens through your account.
  • One account per person. Don’t make accounts to get round a limit or a removal.
  • You don’t need an account to look at a shared list or to claim a gift from one (as a guest, with a name and email address), but guests can’t use the rest of the app.

What you put on I Want I Need

  • It’s yours. Your lists, items, notes, names and photos stay yours. You give us permission to store them, to show them to the people you share them with (and anyone with the link, for a list shared by link), and to process them as the app needs, for as long as you keep them here.
  • Only add what you’re allowed to. Don’t put anything on I Want I Need that’s illegal, hateful, threatening, or that you don’t have the right to use. If you add a product from a link or a screenshot, the name, price and picture come from the shop’s page or your image: they belong to the shop, and we only keep what’s needed to show your list.
  • Other people’s details. Guests who claim a gift type a name and email address. The list’s owner can’t see them (apart from the name, if the owner ticks that gift as received after the event). Don’t use them for anything else.
  • We may remove content or close an account that breaks these terms or the law, and we’ll tell you why unless the law says we can’t.

Sharing lists and giving gifts

  • You choose who sees a list: only you, your friends, or anyone with the link. Anyone you share a list with can copy what’s on it, and can pass on a link-shared list to others.
  • Reserving and buying are a convenience. Marking a gift reserved or bought helps people not to buy the same thing. It isn’t a promise, a contract or a guarantee that a gift will arrive. A reservation ends after 14 days unless it’s marked bought.
  • We’re not a shop. Buy buttons take you to other companies’ websites. We don’t sell gifts, handle payment, or deliver anything, and we’re not responsible for those companies’ prices, products, deliveries or privacy. Prices and details shown on a list may be out of date.
  • Keeping the surprise. We keep who is giving what hidden from the list’s owner until they tick a gift as received, and we’re careful about it, but we can’t promise a surprise: a friend might tell you, and anyone with the right access to our database can read it (see our privacy page).
  • Thank-you notes and messages are sent in your name to a real person. Keep them kind and lawful.

Secret Santa

  • The organiser decides who’s invited and what the budget and date are. We draw the names at random and keep them secret, even from the organiser.
  • If you join a group, whoever draws you can see your lists that are shared by link or with friends (read-only, even if you aren’t friends). Lists you keep private stay private.
  • Swapping gifts is between the people in the group. We’re not responsible if someone doesn’t give a gift, doesn’t keep to the budget, or leaves; the organiser can delete the group at any time.
  • The anonymous questions are for gift ideas. Don’t use them to bully or pressure anyone. We can’t read them in the app, but we can look into reports.

How to use it

Please don’t:

  • send friend requests, invites or messages that are spam, harassing or misleading;
  • pretend to be someone else, or use a name or photo that isn’t yours to use;
  • use bots, scrapers or scripts to read or fill the service, or to get round its limits (they exist to keep it free for everyone);
  • try to find out who has claimed what on a list you own, or who has drawn whom in a group, other than through the app’s own features;
  • probe, overload, or try to break into the service or other people’s accounts, or help anyone else do so;
  • use the service to break the law, or for a business without asking us first.

If you find a security problem, please email us rather than telling the world, and we’ll thank you and fix it.

Affiliate links

I Want I Need is free. We earn a small commission when someone buys something after clicking a Buy button, at no extra cost to them. It never changes who sees what. Shared lists with Buy buttons say so above the first item, and our privacy page explains what is shared with the affiliate network.

The service, and what we promise

  • We’ll take reasonable care to run the service well, and to keep your information safe and private as our privacy page describes.
  • It’s free and provided “as it is”. It may be down for a while, make mistakes (like reading a price wrongly), or change.
  • We may change or stop part of the service. If we ever shut it down, we’ll give you notice and a way to download your data first.
  • Please keep your own copy of anything you can’t afford to lose. You can download your data from your profile at any time.

Our responsibility

Nothing in these terms limits anything that the law doesn’t allow us to limit, including our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, and your legal rights as a consumer. Beyond that, because the service is free, we’re not liable for losses that weren’t a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms, for lost gifts, missed occasions, lost profits or business, or for anything that happens between people using the service or on another company’s website.

Ending your account

  • You can delete your account at any time from your profile (“Your data”). It removes your profile, lists, friends and notifications at once (see our privacy page for exactly what).
  • We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or the law, and we’ll tell you first unless that would be unsafe.
  • Anything that’s meant to survive an account closing, such as the sections on responsibility and the law, does.

Changes, and the law

  • If we change these terms, we’ll update the date at the top, and for a change that matters we’ll tell people with an account before it starts. If you carry on using I Want I Need after that, you agree to the new terms; if you don’t agree, you can delete your account.
  • These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can also use your local courts, and if you’re a consumer you keep the protection of the law where you live.
  • If we’re slow to enforce a rule, we haven’t given it up. If part of these terms turns out not to be enforceable, the rest still applies.
